A permanent resident is someone who has been given permanent resident status by immigrating to Canada, but is not a Canadian citizen. Permanent residents are known as the citizen of other countries. To become a permanent resident, the immigration and Refugee Board must first approve their claim. And after that they can apply for permanent resident status.
Once you obtain a permanent resident status, you have the following rights:
- You will get most of the social benefits that Canadian citizens receive, including health care coverage.
- You can live, work or study anywhere in Canada.
- You can apply for Canadian citizenship.
- You will get the protection under Canadian law and the Canadian character of rights and freedoms.
